Claim: No I do not believe that Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag for Gorge Washington's army. It is documented that Betsy Ross made "ship's colours" for Pennsylvania's navy during the Revolutionary War. The Pennsylvania state navy's ensign was a blue flag with 13 red-and-white stripes in the upper-left-hand corner. It is also known that Mrs. Ross made U.S. flags after the War for 50 years and that she contributed the five-pointed star to the American flag. The tale that she made the first Stars and Stripes flag is based on Ross family folklore from a century after the fact. (See: [1] The annotated Wikipedia article on Betsy Ross, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betsy_Ross and [2] the Betsy Ross article in the Encyclopaedia Britannica, https://britannica.com/biography/Betsy-Ross) The designer of the U.S. flag was Continental Congressman Francis Hopkinson of New Jersey. (See: The annotated Wikipedia article on Francis Hopkinson, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Hopkinson). Submitted by Earl P. Williams, Jr., U.S. flag historian (paleovexillologist)
